Fiery Little Flowers

Lantana.2 photo SoCalJune2013792_zps6e1d7b78.jpg
Lantana blossoms, Southern California

Fiery little flowers
Blazing mid the green,
Not a thing about you
Could be called routine!

Backyard gate, Phoenix, Arizona

A lock on the gate
And one on the door
Make sure that the thief
Will pilfer no more!

Poisonous Ruby Leaf

 photo WildernessJune2013271a_zpsd62d2939.jpg
Poison oak leaf, Southern California

Little leaf of poison,
Lurking in the shade,
Rubbing you the wrong way—
Worst mistake I've made!

Ocotillo blossoms,
Little gems of red,
Queens would gladly wear you—
Or so someone said!

Stray Ruby

 photo SonoranApril2013332a_zps83020ac6.jpg
Stray silk flower, Southern Arizona

Stray silk flower, ruby red,
If I stand upon my head,
I can see you hiding there—
Are you sure that you don't care?

Desert Rubies

Cactus Maiden, sharp of thorn,
How I wish that you were shorn
Of each deadly barb and lance—
Then I’d ask you out to dance!

Covered Wagon

Covered wagon photo SonoranMar20134514a_zpsa2c7952c.jpg
Covered wagon camped for the night, Southern Arizona

He’s stopped for the night,
The wagon’s at rest;
The mules are tethered,
Their hay passed the test;
When the sun rises,
He’ll be on the road
Heading on westward—
Adventure’s his mode!

Retired Sofa

 photo SonoranMar2013878a_zps1ffce291.jpg
Sonoran Desert, Southern Arizona

Throw out the sofa, toss out the chairs;
No one remembers, nobody cares
About the good times shared round the fire—
Even a sofa has to retire!

Queen of Tarts

Queen of Tarts photo Dublin2012-13161a_zps9765f981.jpg
Queen of Tarts, Dublin, Ireland

The Queen of Tarts,
She won our hearts
With cookies, pies and cake.
The Knave of Tarts,
Did slay our hearts,
And tossed them in the lake!

A place of magic, a place of joy
The theatre is to girl and boy,
Parent and cousin, all kith and kin—
Come, the story’s about to begin!

If I Were a Seagull

River Liffey photo Dublin2012-13069a_zps8f32fdc0.jpg
The River Liffey, Dublin, Ireland

If I were a seagull
Where the Liffey flows,
I would seek a nesting place
Red as any rose;

Signs across the river,
One of them will do—
There I’ll find a resting place,
There I’ll hide from you!

Sandwich board man
Sandwich board man on a busy Dublin, Ireland street

If your tummy's empty,
Filling's what you need;
Try an Irish breakfast,
You'll feel good indeed!

Once Upon a Grinchmas

The Grinch's Christmas Tree, Balboa Park, San Diego, California

Once upon a Grinchmas,
His heart was cold as ice;
But when at last it melted,
He turned to Mr. Nice!

Ruby Pavilion

Chinese Pavilion, Riverside
Chinese Pavilion, Riverside, California

Imagine a world without red
On either a robin or sled:
How drab it would be
No scarlet to see,
But only grey shading instead!

Feeling Red

I am feeling red today—
Better that than blue, they say.

Red is such a cheery shade,
Sweetest color ever made,

Brightens everything you do—
Better red, they say, than blue!

Preacher Man

Street evangelist
Evangelist preaching on the street, Morelia, Michoacán, México

Preacher man a-preachin’
To the sky and to the birds;
Don’t you wish you understood
His message and his words?

Story after story comes
Pouring from his tongue—
Sometimes fiery tales
‘bout the world when it was young;

And sometimes dark allusions
To sin and hell and such;
Doesn’t bother me a bit—
Well, at least not much!

Wise one standing guard at night,
Wise eyes gleaming with delight;
Standing guard by day as well,
Keeping back the hordes of hell!

Perhaps you danced at weddings
Twirling round in glee;
But now as I behold you,
Art is what I see.
